Portable night vision devices were first previously used to locate enemy targets at night. Night vision devices are still used extensively in military systems for navigation, surveillance, targeting, and other purposes in addition to those mentioned above. The police and security services often use both thermal imaging and image enhancement technologies, especially for surveillance. Hunters and nature-loving travelers rely on NVDs to be able to navigate through the forest at night with ease.
The main role of portable night vision devices include:
Military, law enforcement, hunting, field observation, surveillance, security, navigation, concealed target observation, recreation, etc.
The main working principle of portable night vision device:
- 1. With a special lens that can converge the infrared rays emitted by objects in the field of view.
- 2. The phased array on the infrared detector element is able to scan the converged light. The detector element is able to generate a very detailed temperature pattern map, called the temperature spectrum map. It only takes about 1/30th of a second for the detector array to acquire temperature information and make a temperature spectrum map. This information is obtained from thousands of probe points in the field of view of the detector array.
- 3. The temperature spectra generated by the detector elements are converted into electrical pulses.
- 4. These pulses are transmitted to the signal processing unit - a circuit board with an integrated precision chip, which converts the information sent by the detector element into data that can be recognized by the display.
- 5. The signal processing unit sends the information to the display, thus presenting various colors on the display, the intensity of which is determined by the intensity of the infrared emission. The pulses coming from the detector element are combined to generate the image.
