Lithium Battery and Protection Board Selection Guide

With the continuous progress of science and technology, Li-ion batteries are widely used in various types of electronic devices such as cell phones, laptop computers, electric vehicles, and so on, due to their high energy density, long life, and light weight. However, lithium batteries in the use of certain security risks, so it is particularly important to choose the right protection board (BMS, battery management system). In this article, we will introduce you to the selection points of lithium batteries and protection boards.

I. Basic knowledge of lithium battery

1.Types: Lithium batteries are mainly categorized into lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries. Lithium-ion batteries usually have a higher energy density, while lithium polymer batteries are more flexible in shape and weight.

2.Capacity: The capacity of Li-ion batteries is usually expressed in milliampere hours (mAh) or ampere hours (Ah), the higher the capacity, the more power the battery can store. The selection should be based on the power consumption and usage time of the equipment to determine the appropriate capacity.

3.Voltage: The nominal voltage of Li-ion batteries is generally 3.7 V, and when fully charged can reach 4.2 V. Different application scenarios may require batteries with different voltages, so make sure that the battery voltage matches the device.

II. Importance of protection boards

The main function of the protection board is to ensure the safety of lithium batteries during the charging and discharging process, preventing overcharging, over-discharging, short-circuiting and overheating. Choosing the right protection plate can effectively extend the service life of the battery and improve safety.

Third, the selection points of the protection board

1.Current carrying capacity: The rated current of the protection plate should be higher than the maximum discharge current of the battery to avoid damage caused by overload. Generally speaking, it is safer to choose the rated current to be more than 1.5 times of the maximum discharge current of the battery.

2.Overcharge and overdischarge protection: Make sure that the protection board has overcharge and overdischarge protection. Overcharging will cause the battery to expand or even explode, while over-discharging will damage the cycle life of the battery.

3.Short-circuit protection: Short-circuit protection is one of the important functions of the protection board, which can quickly cut off the current in the event of a short-circuit, preventing battery damage and the risk of fire.

4.Temperature protection: some high-end protection boards also have a temperature monitoring function, which can automatically cut off the power when the battery temperature is too high, preventing the safety hazards caused by overheating.

5.Balance charging function: for multiple lithium battery packs connected in series, the choice of protection boards with battery balancing function can ensure that the power of each battery is balanced, to extend the service life of the overall battery pack.

IV. Branding and quality

When choosing lithium batteries and protection boards, it is recommended to choose well-known brands and certified products. High-quality lithium batteries and protection boards are not only more reliable in performance, but also more secure in safety.
